Exploring opportunities, considerations, and the latest innovationsAccording to the California Energy Commission, the pumping, treatment, and distribution of water account for nearly 20% of the total electricity consumed in California. The report also stated that “… batteries are a key part of the energy transition especially when it comes to providing grid energy storage.” The California Public Utilities Commission has authorized funding of more than $1 billion through 2024 for its Self-Generation Incentive Program, which offers rebates for installing energy storage technology. This program includes battery storage systems that can function during a power outage. The advances in lithium-ion technology have reached a level that provides a high-cycle efficiency (they don’t lose much energy between recharge and discharge), high energy density (stored energy per unit of weight), and fast response times that make it a viable backup alternative. He has more than three decades of electrical and I&C experience in the water, wastewater, utilities, and petrochemical fields. Ken’s expertise includes power generation, substation design, power distribution, heavy industrial/facilities design, as well as automation and control systems design, power system analysis, master planning, and construction. Prior to joining LEE + RO, Ken was vice president of electrical and I&C at Montgomery Watson Harza. He was responsible for technical guidance for electrical system design and providing technical direction to the engineering staff. Ken received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from University of the Pacific.
