The City of Santa Clarita is currently designing their Sierra Highway Bridge Widening project. As part of construction of that project, the southbound bridge will be reconstructed. The Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency (Client) is constructing two new pipelines (one 20” potable water pipe and one 20” recycled water pipe) inside two new bridge cells. Each bridge cell will contain one new pipeline.
Situation
Water pipelines are one of the “high-risk” utilities by many bridge agencies since its failure could damage the structure, endanger the public or create a traffic hazard. The advantage of using a host bridge in an established corridor over building a dedicated crossing provides greater pipe alignment, lower pipeline cost, reduced environmental impact, and simplified and faster permitting process.
